” Safety is a big deal and is our priority problem to think about. According to a study by Johns Hopkins, there are more than 250,000 people in the United States die each year because of medical mistakes, and surprisingly the third highest cause of death in the United States is medical error. (Ray Sipherd, 2018) If more and more people die from medical mistakes, would people still feel safe about going to hospitals? The Quality of HealthCare in U.S. Committee of the Institute concluded that, “it is not acceptable for patients to be harmed by the healthcare system that is supposed to offer healing and comfort—a system that promises, ‘First, do no harm'” (IOM, 1999). Hence, it is very crucial for every healthcare worker to make sure patients are safe at all the times and maintain a culture of safety within an organization.

As students, it is important to learn about safety and we should not wait until we are BSN-prepared registered nurses to learn about patient safety. Each semester, we need to go to a hospital to learn. It is a real hospital that has real patients there and it is not in a school’s sim room with manikins. If students do not pay attention to safety issues, they will more likely cause harm to patients and themselves too. I believe that understanding patient safety concerns will greatly assist us as we process in our fields and also can empower us to provide safe care during our clinical rotations and as future nurses.”
