Schizophrenia, a severe and disabling mental illness, affects about 1% to 2% of the world’s population. Schizophrenia is associated with disorganized thought and behavior leading to social and occupational dysfunction.

The cause of schizophrenia has been studied for decades, yet scientists still do not know what causes it. However, genetics along with environmental factors such as stress or drug use can trigger this disease in people who already have vulnerability due to their genetic make-up. The ‘stress hormone’ cortisol may play an important role in triggering schizophrenia symptoms by “turning up the activity” of genes that are involved in inflammation reactions within the body that are also linked to schizophrenia. These results were published online on December 19th 2012 by the journal Translational Psychiatry.

A study in the July 2013 issue of Schizophrenia Bulletin reports that people who smoke cannabis before age 17 are four times more likely to develop schizophrenia than those who do not. Also, a history of cannabis use can increase the risk for psychosis in people less than 24 years old and even greater risk if they have a personal or family history of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.

Other factors may play a role in triggering schizophrenia: [This is when you list other possible causes]: – Having relatives with schizophrenia – Being exposed to viruses while becoming pregnant – Exposure to very high highs during adolescence – Being abused during childhood – Stressful life events like losing a loved one or getting into debt

People who go through stressful life events or losses in their lives are at higher risk for becoming schizophrenic. This may be because these experiences trigger the disease in people who already have vulnerability due to their genetic make-up. People with schizophrenia can live normal, productive lives if they receive proper treatment and support from family members and friends. The majority of people with schizophrenia can manage their symptoms well with medication and other treatments (e.g., psychotherapy, occupational therapy). Even when they experience remission of symptoms, many people with schizophrenia continue to need social support for years after becoming ill because relapses of the illness often occur if medications are discontinued over time.
