Elements | Descriptors |
Physical Environment | Make sure you address fully what you observed, and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. |
● Boundaries | What defines the boundaries? Roads, water, railroads. Is the area known for a particular name? What area is this community located in?
The hamlet in issue is bounded on all sides by topographical features such as a canyon, a railroad, and many main roadways. The region is not referred to by any specific name. The ten-block radius that surrounds the selected focal point not only encompasses the vast majority of Arlington but also continues into Sweetwater Creek Ranch. |
● Housing and Zoning | What is the age of the houses? Describe the type of construction material, appearance, and general condition. Do you see single-family housing? Multi-family housing?
Within this neighborhood, one may choose from a wide variety of various types of houses. Besides the single-family homes found in Sweetwater Creek Ranch, the majority of the houses constructed in the late 1970s seem to be of the single-family kind. These structures went erected throughout the early years of the new millennium. Considering their age, the older houses give the impression of being in excellent shape and are clearly well-maintained. In addition, there are flats, townhouses, and condominiums that take up a significant amount of area inside this neighborhood. Near the heart of this neighborhood are some older apartment buildings that have a more dilapidated appearance; nevertheless, on the outskirts of this neighborhood, closer to Sweetwater Creek, there are apartment blocks including condos that are newer; some of them were even erected within the last year. In general, though, the outward aspect of this community is one that is well-kept and cared for. |
● Common Meeting Places | Where do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there and what hours of the day?
The neighborhood offers a wide variety of venues at which residents may congregate and socialize with one another. A retail mall may be found in the vicinity of the community’s main business district. In addition, there is a community center that serves as a venue for various activities and has a stream walk that is next to it and runs along the boundary of the neighborhood. In addition, a movie theater complex that also includes restaurants and shops can be found in the area around the retail mall that was just stated. Last but not least, there are a great number of parks, many of which feature pools as well as waterparks inside them. It is possible to draw the conclusion that this community places a high value on being active and socializing with one another, given the abundance of spaces that are dedicated to these purposes, such as parks and community centers. |
● Indicators of Growth or Decline | Is this a “thriving” community, or does it look “run down?” Is there new or ongoing construction? Businesses and Industries coming to the area? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas clean and well-kept. Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti?
This community is doing really well for itself these days. The residences have had regular upkeep, the roads have been freshly resurfaced, and there are no potholes to be seen anywhere in the neighborhood, and there is an abundance of vegetation, including trees, shrubs, and shrubbery, in the road medians and parks. In addition, artwork created by local artists is openly shown (and well maintained) inside these medians. This neighborhood is home to a plethora of different companies and organizations. There is no graffiti on any of the buildings, and there is no rubbish in any of the public spaces or streets. |
● Employment Opportunities | What places for employment are there in this area? Name the businesses and industries in this area.
There are many opportunities for employment in this area. Businesses, both large and small, make up a large portion of the community. There are multiple eateries, both fast-food and sit-down, boutiques as well as chain store retailers, and large grocery stores in addition to small marketplaces. |
● Transportation |
How do people get from one place to another? Is public transportation available? How timely is it? Personal autos? Bikes? Walking?
Within this neighborhood, there are many different options available for travel. Although it may seem that private automobiles account for the bulk of mobility, there is also access to public transportation. It seems that buses run on time, and in my experience, the trains which operate in this neighborhood are among the most punctual I’ve ever encountered. It is not unusual to come across pedestrians and cyclists when going around the neighborhood, so be on the lookout for them. |
People | Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. |
● Race and Ethnicity | What is the majority racial group represented? What is the majority ethnic group represented? Describe the distribution of gender, approximate ages, single families, multiple families, and generational families?
The ethnic group that makes up the vast bulk of the Caucasian population. Despite the presence of people of different races, such as East Indians, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Middle Easterners, the bulk of the population is still comprised of Caucasians. Based on the community offers and hangouts, it seems that Arlington, as well as Sweetwater Creek Ranch place a significant focus on the importance of family. As a consequence of this, there is a balanced representation of people across all age groups and genders. The majority of older families, some of which may include several generations, can be found in Arlington. On the other hand, Sweetwater Creek Ranch is home to more recent and younger families, most of which are single-family homes with children less than ten years old. |
● Cultural Characteristics | What cultural similarities or differences do you observe? Languages spoken? Clothing? Ethnic eating places? Culturally-based celebrations? Signs in languages other than English?
Although English is the predominant language spoken, another language that’s also highly common is Spanish. Spanish is spoken by a significant number of people. I would claim that this neighborhood is culturally varied due to the various restaurants of different nationalities that it has. There seem to be no road signs in any language other than English, yet, caballero lifestyles that are rooted in Hispanic culture are honored annually with rodeos and other celebrations. |
● Lifestyle Healthy Behaviors | What healthy lifestyle behaviors do you observe? Do you see people exercising, wearing helmets when biking, seat belt usage, using trash cans for garbage disposal, and having healthy eating practices?
People may be seen exercising in a variety of ways, including jogging, walking, and cycling. Helmets are standard equipment for bicycles, while both passengers and drivers buckle up in automobiles. The residents of this neighborhood have access to a variety of dining alternatives, including those that cater to a healthy diet, as well as quick-service restaurants. |
● Lifestyle Risk Behaviors | What unhealthy lifestyle behaviors do you observe? Do you see people practicing risky lifestyle behaviors such as drinking alcoholic beverages, Smoking, and fighting? Do you see signs of violence, gang activity, drug use, criminal activity, and bars on doors and/or windows? Do you see overweight/underweight persons? Do you see children unattended playing out in the streets? Do you see any signs of homelessness? Street people? Describe gender, age, and race/ethnicity of persons observed.
Smoking is going on, despite the fact that potentially dangerous actions such as fighting or fighting on the street have not been seen. There are no indications of any kind of gangs, drug usage, criminal activities, bars on doors and/or windows, or any instances of public intoxication. Warning signs announcing the presence of a “neighborhood watch” at all times are strategically placed throughout the community to serve as a deterrent to lawbreakers. The inhabitants of the neighborhood vary from those who are overweight to those who are in good health. It would seem that there are not many persons who are at dangerously low weights. The children who are outside playing are shielded from potential danger by the presence of their parents, who are supervising them, and by road signs that warn passing motorists that “children are at play.” There are not many indications that someone is homeless. There is just one place in Arlington where people living without homes may be seen, and this also is outside of the Maverick Parking Garage parking lot that abuts both Arlington and the neighborhood that is directly next to it. The majority of the homeless persons that may be spotted in this region are middle-aged or elderly men of African-American or Caucasian descent. |
● Poverty Indications | Do you see any signs of homelessness? Street people? Describe gender, age, and race/ethnicity of persons observed.
Outside of the Maverick Parking Garage, parking lot is still the only place in this neighborhood where people who are homeless can be seen. This is the only place throughout this community wherein homelessness could be seen. This region serves as the boundary between the city of Arlington as well as the community of Laguna Niguel, which is located nearby. Typically, elderly guys of Caucasian descent may be seen begging in this region. |
Services in the Community | Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area, how far away it is and how people will access it. |
● Social Services | Do you see evidence of recreation centers, parks, and social services? For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to access these services? Describe each.
Community members have access to a limited number of parks and leisure facilities for their use. There is the Norman P. Murray Community Center, that is mostly for residents in Arlington, because there are a number of parks in Sweetwater Creek Ranch, such as water parks as well as community pools. Additionally, there is a community center that is just for those already in Sweetwater Creek Ranch. These venues are well-kept and provide a wide variety of activities for the local community. One such example is seen at the Murray facility, which has an adjacent path that follows a stream. The “Walk Against Drugs” campaign frequently makes use of both this location and the community center in order to further their cause. Additionally, Sweetwater Creek Ranch’s is used in a variety of different ways. For the Fourth of July, for instance, the local community of LR will let off fireworks from here. |
● Health Services | Do you see evidence of health (Hospitals, Dr’s Offices, and Clinics) and mental health services? Describe each. Are there any signs of alternative services in the area, such as healers (curanderos), herbalists, herbal stores, palm readers, acupunctures, chiropractors. For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to access these services?
This neighborhood provides access to a comprehensive range of medical care options. The town has a road and a facility that are both devoted to health, as well as the road’s name is Health Center Rd. This road is home to a number of medical office buildings and doctor’s offices, in addition to a major medical facility. A little farther down the road, there seems to be a facility that provides urgent care. |
● Fire and Police Services | Do you see any fire and police services/equipment/officers? Where are the closest fire and/or police stations?
Both a fire station as well as a police station may be found located inside this hamlet. The Arlington Police Station can be found just behind the City Hall, which serves as the geographic focal point of the city. A retail mall may be found right close to the fire station, which is just a few streets away. |
● Educational Resources | Where is the nearest public library? Discuss the Schools and Universities/Community colleges?
The city library may be found next to both the municipal building and the police station. There is just one community college throughout the surrounding area, and that is Saddleback College. Both Arlington as well as Sweetwater Creek Ranch are home to a large number of primary schools, as well as middle schools including high schools. There are a total of 31 public schools located between the two villages, however only 15 can be found within a radius of 10 blocks. This statistic does not take into account the wide variety of Montessori and KinderCare schools that are offered. |
● Religions | What signs of religion do you see? Discuss the types of churches, mosques, temples? What services are offered by these churches, for example, Day Care, Mother’s Day Out, Summer Camps,
Languages Classes, Citizenship Classes, Food Banks, Clothing, |
other.
In this neighborhood, there are many different places of worship to choose from. To be more specific, there is a mosque, a Christian church, a Presbyterian church, and even a Jewish temple. In addition, this neighborhood is home to a number of very modest Christian congregations that hold their services in the local public schools. There are signs posted outside of their venues that identify the name of the church as well as the times at which their services are held. These congregations provide a variety of services as well, like as food drives, day care centers, including food banks. |
|
Business & Industry | Describe stores and shops available in the community, e.g., grocery stores, gas stations, and department stores. What type of business climate exists? Manufactures? Light or heavy industry? Large employers? Small business owners? Retail? Hospitality industry? Do people have to seek employment elsewhere? Is this considered a “bedroom community”- where people work outside this community but live here? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area.
The town has a variety of different kinds of retailers and shops, such as convenience stores, grocery stores, including department stores. There are no manufacturing facilities, but there are a large number of retail establishments, which provide employment to a variety of people. Because this neighborhood is also considered a suburb, it is reasonable to suppose that it serves as a “bedroom community” for residents who find employment outside of the neighborhood but continue to make their home there. However, this is not true for the vast majority of people. This neighborhood provides a wealth of job options for its residents. |
● Politics | What indicators do you see about politics? Posters? Headquarters? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area.
Through the course of the Windshield survey, there were almost no political indications uncovered. |
● Media | Do you see indicators of what people read? Listen to the radio? Watch TV? Are there any signs of media language other than English? Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area.
There was no evidence to suggest what individuals read or what they watch on television. There were some commercials for a variety of television series, but this may not be a true representation of what the inhabitants of the community really watch on television. The only clue we had about the radio was gleaned from overhearing what the other people on the road were listening to in their automobiles. This included everything from a radio station broadcasting in Spanish to songs from country music as well as pop music genres. |
● Key Informants | Interview a fireman or police officer.
Also interview a librarian, school teacher, school nurse or administrator. Ask each person interviewed to share their perceptions of
the following and cite personal communication as appropriate:
1. Interview with fireman or police officer
˃ Community’s Health issues Officer J.H. says our neighborhood is a “healthy” place to live (J.H., personal communication, 2022). If you have a medical emergency or need regular treatment, there are several hospitals as well as doctors’ offices available. As far as he is concerned, he would want to see an end to childhood obesity (J.H., personal communication, 2022). The other is the prevalence of cigarette smoking amongst students and teens (J.H., personal communication, 2022). ˃ Community’s Safety issues It was noted that Arlington is among the “safest cities around Texas ,” with a “very high crime rate,” by J.H. regarding safety concerns (J.H., personal communication, 2022). Considering this low crime rate, he noted that he frequently finds local residents guilty of speeding on key roadways (J.H., personal communication, 2022). ˃ Strengths of the Community He works in Arlington and resides in Laguna Hills, where he is known as Officer JH. It doesn’t matter how far he lives from the office because of the welcoming atmosphere. A favorite aspect of his work is visiting schools as well as talking about it with students, according to him (J.H., personal communication, 2022). |
2. Interview with librarian, school teacher, school nurse or administrator ˃ Community’s Health issues The incidence of overweight youngsters is the most pressing public health concern that teacher M.W. has seen in her neighborhood, she says (M.W., personal communication, July, 2022). Getting children immunized, particularly those who attend public schools, is something else she stresses (M.W., personal communication, July, 2022). ˃ Community’s Safety issues Drivers speeding on roads and using their cell phones while driving are M.W.’s community safety concerns, according to him (M.W., personal communication, July, 2022). Kids as well as other passersby are already at “great risk for harm” if drivers are really not paying enough attention, says M.W. (M.W., personal communication, July, 2022). ˃ Strengths of the Community M.W. takes great pride in the high level of education in this area (M.W., personal communication, July, 2022). She believes that perhaps the public schools in her town provide an excellent education for all of its pupils, even though she is proud of their high test results (M.W., personal communication, July, 2022). She is indeed happy that she and her family can feel protected here (M.W., personal communication, July, 2022).

Analysis of Windshield Survey | Analyze and summarize your observations and the input from key informants. Write a 3 paragraph summary of community health (2) and safety (1) issues for this community and strengthens of the community. Remember to cite personal communication as appropriate:
Between the Windshield survey and the input from key informants I |
found very useful information about my community. According to my observations, the neighborhood in issue is one that is extremely well kept and has a high level of safety. The community’s members come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and the community’s services and resources are designed to accommodate this diversity. I’d say that, all things considered, this is a pretty pleasant neighborhood in which to make your home. It is in close proximity to a variety of conveniences and retail complexes, but what is most significant is the presence of a large number of medical facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and urgent care centers.
The problems of Smoking and obesity, particularly those of juvenile obesity, were brought up as concerns about the health of the community by the informants. Although Smoking is not very widespread in this neighborhood, the problem is nonetheless there. While I was driving, I saw a few commercials that were critical of people who smoked or used tobacco products. My observations revealed that smokers commonly ranged in age from 20 to 40 and were of both sexes. In addition to Smoking, another issue that concerned the informants was being overweight. In a manner comparable to that of Smoking, obesity is not blatantly widespread but may be seen throughout the population. The component of this neighborhood that is located in Arlington has a higher prevalence of obesity as compared to the Sweetwater Creek Ranch sector, which features a greater number of fitness clubs and gyms. The problems of safety that were brought up by the key informants include both speeding and talking on the phone while operating a motor vehicle. During the course of the Windshield survey, it became clear that this community struggles with several common concerns. These were apparent concerns for the cop who was being interrogated, but they were also pertinent considerations for the teacher, seeing as how she works directly with pupils and youngsters on a daily basis. I was able to make this observation based on the results of the Windshield survey, which showed that residents of the community were guilty of not coming to a full stop at stop lights, messaging and chatting on the phone while driving, running red lights, especially speeding on key roadways. |

General Objective Data Criteria for the Community-at-Large
- Demographics: Total population; age distribution; gender distribution; family characteristics (single parent, multi-family, etc.). Remember compare objective data for your community with local (city), state, and national data. Remember to cite sources as
- Racial/Ethnic Characteristics: Remember to compare objective data for your community with local (city), state, and national data. Remember to cite sources as
- Economy: poverty rate, unemployment rates, median income. Remember compare objective data for your community with local (city), state, and national data. Remember to cite sources as
The average household income within Robinson, Tx is $92 thousand, with such a median income of $37.5 thousand as well as a poverty rate of 7.94 percent. In Texas, the typical household income is $30.5 thousand dollars, while the poverty rate is 13.6 percentage points higher. By November of 2020, Texas’ unemployment rate had risen from 6.9% to 8.1%; this was probably a factor in the outbreak of COVID 19. The state of Texas’s median income is just shy of the national average of $31 thousand. The unemployment rate in the United States is 6.7%, while the poverty rate is 11.8%. The jobless rate in America remained stable towards the end of last year.
- Education: High school completion rates; higher education statistics. Remember compare objective data for your community with local (city), state, and national data. Remember to cite sources as
- Identify two Morbidity and Mortality/Risk Problems: (Based on your observations from Week 1 subjective assignment, windshield survey and key informants provide Morbidity, Mortality (M&M) and risk data for your community… Example 1: if you observed obesity in your community then present obesity rates
and health conditions associated with obesity [i.e., CVD, HD, Depression, etc.). Example 2: smoking/drinking rates and health conditions associated with Smoking [i.e., Lung Cancer, COPD, other]. These variables may include the following: gender (who does this problem affect the most, men or women); age distribution; ethnicity or racial group(s) mostly-affected; morbidity and mortality rates; any data related to life-expectancy in light of the health issues; is there a geographic area where the health problems mainly exist; is there a relationship between the health issue(s) and environmental health hazards; are these life-threatening health issues? Remember compare objective data for your community with local (city), state, and national data. Remember to cite sources as appropriate.
There is a lot of activity outside in Robinson’s Cedar Ridge neighborhood, however the COVID epidemic has taken a toll on the area. Run Runs, October Fest, and Camp Gladiator have all been canceled due to the epidemic. These reduce obesity and sadness linked to social separation. During the initial wave of COVID’s effects, all non-essential businesses throughout Texas were forced to close. Visitors are not allowed inside hospitals and other healthcare facilities; family members are only permitted to peek via a window.
- Other data as needed (air, water quality, crimes rates). Remember compare objective data for your community with local (city), state, and national data. Remember to cite sources as
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandatory tests were fulfilled by Robinson’s 2019 water quality report. There are no odd odors or tastes in the water. In addition, it satisfies federal and state regulations for potable water (City of Robinson). Monitoring water and air quality is a primary responsibility of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. At this point, there are no further water adjustments needed; the last one was in 2018. The Federal Clean Air Act establishes national ambient air quality standards, prevents pollution, and ensures that criteria are fulfilled. Soot, dust, as well as smoke pollutant concentrations are low over the vast majority of Texas (TCEQ 2020). As a city with a crime index lower than 39%, Robinson is considered to be safer than 39% of all American cities. Compared to Texas’s 4.19 violent crime rate per 1,000 population, Robinson’s rate is 2.26. (City-Data.com). In 2019, the total crime rate in the United States remained 379.4 per 100,000 residents. (Crime Data Explorer, 2019)
Analysis of Data
- Based on your subjective and objective review of your findings, what conclusions have you arrived at? Remember to cite sources as
- What impressions from your subjective observations were unfounded/invalid?
- Given the objective data, what impressions were validated/substantiated?
- What cause-and-effect relationships did you discover/identify?
2. Problem Analysis for Community/Zip Code:
Problem: List two (2) problems within your community (for example, Infant Malnutrition, CVD, Lung Cancer, Obesity, Alcoholism, Violence) NOTE: These problems need to be something the Community Health Nurse can impact (for example, a CHN cannot build a sidewalk, repair a street, implement a new bus route, etc.). Remember to cite sources as appropriate.
- _Smoking
- _Obesity
Select one of these problems and complete the Problem Analysis chart.

3. Community Health Nursing Diagnoses:
Based on your subjective and objective assessment findings above for both Weeks 1 and 2, write TWO priority community health nursing diagnoses.
NOT use NANDA. Use the following format for the community health nursing diagnoses:
- Risk of (State the health problem or risk.)
- Among (Identify the population group )
- Related to ( State factor(s) contributing to the health problem or associated risk.)
Health Risk/problem of (specific injury, illness, or potential of, complication of, etc) among (specific population) related to (supporting evidence from your assessment findings). Reference: Shuster, George F., (2014). Community as Client: Assessment and Analysis. In Stanhope,
Marcia and Lancaster, Jeanette, Public Health Nursing (8th ed., pg. 413). Saint Louis, MO: Elsevier.
.Your CHN Diagnoses MUST be something that a community/public health nurse can do something about. See example below.
➢ Note: Poverty is NOT a CHN diagnosis.
- Remember do NOT use NANDA Nursing
For example: Risk of asthma complications among children in SE Dallas County related to observations of overcrowded living conditions, lack of public transportation (may result in inability to access health care), high number of animals observed living in homes, poverty indications (may result in lack financial resources to purchase medications.)
