Field of Psychology

For many years the field of psychology has been studied from a Strictly eurocentric point of reference. For that reason, the minority groups have been left out. This has gone to the extent that they are pathologized. Through African-American Centred psychology, We are able to see how African-Americans know and experience the world. African American-centered psychology emerged specifically to bring to light the psychological perspective of African Americans in the midst of traditional westernized nations.

Like every other person, the psychological well-being of African-Americans is important. Through African-American-centered psychology, some of the challenges that African Americans face can be dealt with through more accurate knowledge. The approaches used in African-American-centered psychology Accurately focus on the culture and use this knowledge to help the blacks in America. It also offers an accurate framework that can be used in the therapy of African Americans.

There are major Concepts and theories that help us understand African-American-centered psychology. one concept is deconstructionism. African-American-centered psychology is made up of many theories present in the black community in America. This concept first argues that African-Americans can be studied using universal law. The second part of the concept argues that African-Americans can be studied using African beliefs and behaviors. In studying all of these elements, psychology is important. The deconstruction method Focuses on diagnosis and breaking down misconceptions and inaccuracies that psychology perpetuates. To make African-American-centered psychology effective, some of the researchers have tried to deconstruct some of the challenges that African American psychologists face. For example when major challenges underrepresentation of African American psychologists in the higher education sector. Secondly, it focuses on the American Psychology Association’s neglect of racism and poverty and the lack of black psychologists in the APA.

The second concept is the reconstructionist approach. This concept Focuses on correcting some of the errors in psychology. This is to ensure that psychology is culturally sensitive. To achieve these, the idea majorly focuses on black self-concept, racial identity, and cultural mistrust. The reconstructionist approach argues that psychology should stop centering the Black self-concept around euro-centric psychological ideas and instead redefine the black self-concept as separate. The reason for this approach is to ensure that the black self-concept is not spread wrongly. Similarly, it ensures that inaccurate messages in narratives about African-Americans are disbanded.

The last approach is the constructionist approach. This approach argues that African-American-centered psychology should be based on an African worldview. This will be distinct and independent from eurocentric psychology. The values of African-Americans and that of whites and the other cultures are different. For that reason, African-American-centered psychology should be Afrocentric psychology which is developed under the practices and values of the African worldview. According to construction, the Afrocentric approach should majorly focus on the History of African-Americans because, in one way or another, the operations that African Americans went through shaped their psychological perspective and well-being. Therefore, in general, African-American-centered psychology Focuses on developing a psychological perspective this thing from a euro-centric approach and Focuses on the values and beliefs of African-Americans.

The intended audience for this project is psychology students.

I will share this information with psychology students by presenting it to the class.

3. What do you expect your audience to do after interacting with these, or what will they learn from this?

I expect the psychology student to change the perspective on psychology after reading what I have shared. This will help psychology students understand that different psychological approaches work differently with people from different cultures.

4. What relevance does this have to the cost concept? How does this advance the field of black psychology?

These advances in the field of psychology by enabling psychology students and other people to understand the concept of African-American-centered psychology.

5. What was your creative process for doing this project?

In doing this project, I used logos. I used logical information from different psychology articles to come up with the information.

6. What did you learn from creating this project?

From this project, I learned that approaches used in psychology differ from one culture to another, more importantly when it comes to therapy. I realized that traditional and cultural beliefs are important in developing a psychological therapy plan.
