The Project Management   Body of Knowledge guide is a book published by the Project Management Institute, which provides a set of guidelines, practices, processes, principles, and techniques used in projects. The PMBOK Guide has evolved through different editions that give a progressive idea and knowledge of project management. The Guide was first published in 1996 by PMIA and was later revised, and the second edition was released in 2000. The project managers may use the methodologies provided in this article to implement the necessary process in project management.

According to the PMBOK   guide, some factors lead to creating a new project, such as competitive forces, economic changes, social needs, and environmental considerations that influence an organization’s ongoing operations and business strategies. However, poorly managed projects may result in some of the issues as well some featured in PMBOK. They include poor quality, losing reputation for the organization, failure to achieve the organization’s goal, high unplanned costs, and other issues. A project may have different risks, which may be individual or overall project risks in the entire operation until it’s completed. This requires the project managers to come up with practical ways to manage the involved risks.

A project requires adequate planning and following the laid down procedures during the planning of the project for it to be successful and attain its overall goal. Planning scope management involves creating a scope management plan whereby the documents required on how the project scope will be defined, validated, and lastly controlled effectively. Additionally, size refers to the features and functions, and it involves getting the relevant information needed to start a project. This will include considering the product needs for the project to attain its specific goal and the stakeholders’ requirements.           However, the planning scope in a project helps establish what will be involved in a project and what will not be involved in the project, and help control what needs to be allowed or omitted in the project; hence it will establish control factors to be used in addressing elements that result to a change during entire project operation. The Planning scope management ensures that guidelines, guidance, and direction on how the scope will be carried out throughout the whole procedure of the project. (Elyse, P.2006).  This ensures clear instructions on how to go about the project and how to solve the problems arising from the project; hence, this ensures that the project’s primary goal is well achieved as planned and forecasted. To conduct a successful planning scope management, one has to have numerous inputs beginning with a project charter that outlines the project’s objectives by identifying the stakeholders and setting goals, responsibilities, and roles of the project.

Additionally, the project management plan is equally essential because it gives a description of the project life cycle and the methodology that will be used in the running of the project. There have to be enterprise environmental factors of this project to be considered, and lastly, the organizational process assets well adhered to. However, during planning scope management, tools and techniques such as expert judgment and meetings should be effectively put in place to achieve a common goal and successful project at the end. Planning scope management generally involves numerous steps to accomplish a precise mapping of the project and operate within the planned scope. And this would help in the accurate allocation of resources so that the project ends on time and within the scheduled budgetary control.   These steps include identifying stakeholders that will participate in the project and getting requirements from them, as this would help in knowing what is required to satisfy the needs of the stakeholders. Secondly, creating a sound detailed project scope statement that identifies the project goals and objectives that have to be attained at the end of the project.

Additionally, one has to create a work breakthrough structure to help map out, state, and indicate all the necessary tasks of the project. Another step following will be developing the processes in which the work breakdown structure will be maintained and approved during the entire operation of the project. Following this step is that the list, roles, and responsibilities of the whole project team should be outlined well and clearly to help everyone know what they are supposed to do and how they are supposed to do it. Additionally, establishing the process for formal acceptance of completed project outcomes is then required at this stage. Lastly, determining how to control and document change requires a clear and good understanding of the scope statement.

In conclusion, planning scope management is critical. It plays a crucial role in a project operation as this would help avoid scope creep, which causes changes to occur in a project when not well managed and controlled effectively. The PMBOK  has contributed so much in the evolvement and knowledge building on project management, and the ideas are well brought out clearly.
