Design Interventions in Japanese Train Stations

Understanding the design interventions in the Japanese Train stations is getting the prototypes that prove the human behavior after the innovation of the trains in Japan. The action of humans is an essential aspect of their ways of life. The introduction of train stations in Japan has influenced many factors in people’s lives and thus changed human behaviors.

Description of the behavioral problem.

The introduction of commuter trains changed the human behavior of the people of Japan. Most people got the intense feeling of using the trains for transportation since they were tired of using the vehicles and the private means of transportation. At the train stations, it was chaotic at the beginning since people were packed shoulder to shoulder to get the best seats in the arriving trains. Further, those departing move in a difficult way to descend and get t their respective place in a rush. These places, therefore, are noisy and always packed with commuters who move around. The trains, however, maintain their on-time performance since they drive on schedule.

Description of why the old design needs to be improved.

The human usability of trains and the behavior at the train stations when trains were being introduced were not organized since the implementation for the system was not well designed. The design could have been done adequately by the performance not well done. In the version of anything that affects the social life of human beings, they have to be involved, or the experts who have studied human behavior should be involved in the process for proper implementation. The old designs at the train station need improvement since the commotion caused some people to get hurt. Individuals getting to their jobs in the morning could get to the hospitals before getting to the job later in the day. It thus indicates the positions interfered.

Further, pick-pocketing was also rampant in the place due to long queues that commuters were making as they waited for the trains to arrive. The invention of escalators would improve the old design since it would help decongest people at the train station.  The commuters who could use the escalators simultaneously as the other people would have been more efficient, thus saving more time for people.

Analysis of how the current “intervention” in the article worked and supporting Human Factors principles you learned from class

At the Japanese train stations, the people who designed the flow of passengers have the task of helping the patrons improve the service at the escalators of either side. Painting the footprints on the steps of the escalator would be a suitable solution. The impressions would provide a visual cue that all the commuters would get the chance of pre-attentively determining how at least two passengers could fit comfortably.

Description of the behavioral problem.

The train station was built under low-level technology, which meant less orf achievement as far as technology. It forced people, especially those traveling long distances, to have a hectic time booking the tickets. The commuters had to manually access the train offices and book their tickets before traveling. Long queues were also experienced, which meant that people had to waste a lot of time before getting their ticket. It forced the people with disabilities to postpone their travels or those with emergent issues to cancel or seek alternative ways. However, the management of the train station has recognized that the use of technology is enhancing the booking style within the station to change the behavior of commuters and increase efficiency.

Description of why the old design needs to be improved

The introduction of technology in the travel industry has been of great significance, and most of the commuters, together with the operating managers, appreciate the initiative. Technology at the beginning becomes difficult for humans to adapt to, but then their behaviors change. Booking the tickets becomes an easier thing for the commuters, unlike the old methods. There is reduced congestion on queues which led to some people collapsing in wait for their time to be served. Some of the airborne diseases will also be avoided by being in crowded places. Generally, the train station would have increased efficiency in its operation in serving their clients. They will also be aware of the number of people to travel per day per hour and even per week depending on the number of booking made, unlike the previous where little statistics could be kept about the number of people traveling.

Innovation at the train station through technology would enhance the ability of the commuters to book tickets, enhancing the workflow of the workers. The Japanese Train Station management would track their clients in case of an emergency or criminal activity happening on the train. There would be increased revenue in the business, and thus profit will be realized. On the other hand, the passengers will have an easier time getting to the tickets and moving to the station.

Behavioral Problem 3

Description of the behavioral problem.

Technology has been proved to be an essential factor in the modern world. Theft at the train station was misery to most people. The young and the older people had developed a new snatching and even mugging other people to steak their items. The behavior was uncontrollable, and even the police officers were unable to curb it. Measures for the prevention of evil acts had to be put in place, however.

Description of why the old design needs to be improved.

The calling of police officers when a suspected thief is caught has been hectic since some of these people held guns that scared the public, and they got away with the crime. The old ways of dealing with these crimes never worked efficiently, and therefore there was a need to have a police station nearby the train station. The police would always be moving around the place to keep the place safe. However, the introduction of CCTV cameras would work best by being set at strategic places. The police, together with the security personnel at the station, would be able to observe any occurrence and act immediately.

The safety of the commuters will be improved, and most people will feel safe traveling by train. The safety of the train station would also increase business since goods would be docked safely and collected safely by the respective people. The efficiency will increase revenue collection in the country and the train station at large.
