Mystery Math Town
Mystery Math Town is a phenomenal math game with compelling characters and a fun storyline. The game is ideal for third-grade students, preferably age 7. In one of my fourth-grade classes, I deployed this game to my students as part of a more extensive campaign to improve their academic performance. I can tell you for a fact that the results were impressive. My students often embark on a mission to locate fireflies that are trapped inside jars. The jars are hidden in undisclosed locations inside the houses located all over MYSTERY MATH TOWN. From the mathematics perspective, students collect numbers while they help fireflies.
Students are requi4red to have numbers for them to navigate between the different rooms. They do this through windows, stairs, or doors. For instance, my students might see 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, from which they are supposed to two numbers that can be added and add up to 10. Once they identify the right combination, they’re able to unlock the next house. The rooms get more challenging as the students levels-up. The same applies to the mathematics problems they’re working on.
In other cases, students gather gold coins which are used in purchasing portraits for the gallery. Students are also able to create avatars with unique skin tones. The game also allows players to customize specific mathematics challenges. This is why I can assign specific mathematic challenges to my students; this is based on the needs that each of them has. Feedback from my students shows that the app has educational value. This is because they’re able to learn division, addition, algebraic thinking, and subtraction. The game allows students to view the operation and answer in a host of numbers from where they choose the right one. However, there are a host of different numbers, all of which qualify as correct. This reinforces algebraic thinking and arithmetic skills. Kids are also able to engage in logical and critical thinking. I’m also able to track progress on how my students are improving in their performance. All of this is done in an engaging and fun way.
