Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is important in being able to use, understand and manage one’s emotions in positive means in order to effectively communicate, conflict defusing, overcome challenges as well as to relieve stress (Peter, 2010). The strengths that I possess include the ability to have a better understanding on the nature, strength as well as the effects of emotions. This assists in regulating the emotions over the expressions and in making use of the emotions in order to promote peace and harmony. Another strength include portraying empathy and compassion towards others as a result of the patients that one is likely to encounter with psychological issues.

The weaknesses include in the inability to control some of the emotions that result in affecting both the thoughts and the behaviour. Another weakness is being unable to control the impulsive feelings and behaviours that result to failure to follow through on commitments and easily adapting to the changing circumstances. Lastly, the inability to clearly communicate, maintaining a good relationship in addition to conflict management. Techniques that I would implement to improve on the weaker areas on self-awareness are meditation that involves moment by moment improvement of awareness (Petrides, 2011). I achieve this through setting aside some time before sleeping to focus on breathing. Another technique to increase self-awareness is recording things that one intends to do and keeping track of the progress. This will assist in realizing any weaknesses and also learn from other individual’s strengths.
